The night of the candles is a well-rooted tradition in Colombia and can be considered as the first great celebration within the period that encompasses the end of the year (or Christmas) parties, although, in reality, it is a relatively young party.

Its first celebration officially takes us back to the middle of the 20th century, on December 8, 1854 to be precise, when Pope Pius IX declared the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary a dogma of faith for having been preserved from original sin since its conception.
